Székely Nemzeti Tanács - Consiliul Naţional Secuiesc - Szekler National Council

Today, 10 March 2026, in Târgu Mureș, the Székelys gathered here, together with all those who express solidarity with us—here and throughout the world—walking on the path of law and democracy, once again express unanimously and with determination our will: we demand the territorial autonomy of Székely Land!

The Day of Székely Freedom is a day of remembrance, but also a day of claiming our rights. We remember those who sacrificed their lives for freedom and reaffirm our commitment to a peaceful and democratic struggle.

We declare once again: the territorial autonomy of Székely Land does not infringe upon the territorial unity and sovereignty of the Romanian state, does not affect the interests of Romanian citizens or those of other nationalities living in Székely Land, and is in accordance with the Constitution of Romania.

The autonomy of Székely Land—according to European practice—means the right and the real capacity of the Székely-Hungarian community, which forms the majority in its homeland, to assume, under its own responsibility and in the interest of the entire region, the resolution of a significant part of public affairs, in accordance with the principle of subsidiarity, for the benefit of all inhabitants of the region. This also serves the interests of Romania.

The autonomous region would have a democratically elected body, situated between the state and the local community, which exercises self-administrative competences and enjoys public legal status and corresponding powers.

Upon its accession to the Council of Europe, Romania unilaterally undertook the obligation to implement Recommendation 1201 (1993). Article 11 of the document provides:

“In regions where persons belonging to a national minority form the majority, these persons have the right to have at their disposal local or autonomous administrations or a special status corresponding to their specific historical and territorial situation and in accordance with the national legislation of the state.”

We are all supporters of peace and security. In this spirit, we recall Resolution 1334 (2003) of the Council of Europe, which recommends institutions of territorial autonomy as an instrument for the prevention and peaceful resolution of internal conflicts.

Over the past more than thirty years, Romania has not fulfilled these commitments, and its authorities have so far refused dialogue on this matter.

In this spirit:

  • We demand that Székely Land constitute a distinct administrative and development region with autonomous competences, based on the legislative proposal elaborated by the Székely National Council.
  • We call on the Government and the Parliament of Romania to respect the international commitments undertaken and the will of the community of Székely Land.
  • We demand that the Government initiate a genuine dialogue on the status of Székely Land with the legitimate representatives of the Székely people—the Székely National Council and the Székely local authorities.
  • We call on the Government of Romania—aware of its responsibility toward its own voters in Székely Land—to support the European Citizens’ Initiative entitled “Cohesion Policy for the Equality of the Regions and Sustainability of the Regional Cultures.” The success of this initiative could open new cohesion-policy resources for national regions, from which all inhabitants of Székely Land could benefit. In case of failure, the Government of Romania will have to explain to its voters why it did not do everything possible to attract these resources.
  • We protest against the attacks directed at Hungarian-language educational institutions, against the persecution of local authorities in Székely Land, and against the restriction of the use of the mother tongue and national symbols.
  • We protest against any plan for administrative reform that would integrate Székely Land into a larger region, fragment it, or affect its historical and cultural unity.
  • We express solidarity with the Premonstratensian Order of Oradea and firmly protest against the eviction of Abbot Rudolf Anzelm Fejes, condemning any measures by the authorities that infringe upon the religious freedom of the Hungarian national community and its confessional institutions.
  • We protest against any intention to abolish Székely communes.

Székely Land was, is, and will be!
Székely Land is one and indivisible.

We want full freedom and real equality for all inhabitants of Székely Land!

Autonomy for Székely Land, freedom for the Székely people!

Târgu Mureș,
10 March 2026
