Ever since President Woodrow Wilson formulated it in 1918, the right of peoples to self-determination received universal recognition. If the European Union is the land of law and democracy, than this right should prevail not only in the legal system of the Union, but also in its everyday practice.
When Serbia denied this right from the Albanian people living in Kosovo, she had to face NATO bombing. It is impossible then for the inhabitants of a national region of an EU member-state to be deprived from this right, when trying to make use of it. It is the basic right of the population of such regions to decide, if they opt for an autonomous status inside that member-state – like Szeklers do -, or – like the case of Catalonia and Scotland – they choose to have their own state, which is intended to become a member state of the EU.
The European Union will be stronger and more competitive, if each of its citizens consider it their home, and finds his/her place inside it. Right now a stronger and more competitive Europe is necessary. So we expect from the leaders of the EU and its member-states to respect the right of the peoples to self-determination, to treat the will of the peoples of the national regions with responsibility, because this is the interest of Europe.
In this spirit, we support the rally organized on the 30th in Brussels.
