Székely Nemzeti Tanács - Consiliul Naţional Secuiesc - Szekler National Council

Officers of the Szekler National Council, President Izsák Balázs, Foreign Affairs Commissioner Dabis Attila, and Vice-President Márton Zoltán, met with Falah Mustafa Bakir, Foreign Affairs Minister of the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan on the 15th of November in Budapest.

They mutually informed one another, about their respective communities and outlined the alternatives of a future cooperation. Falah Mustafa Bakir pointed out that Hungarians of the Carpathian-Basin live similarly separated in different states as the Kurds. However, their situation is more relieved by the fact that they have a kin-state which supports them and that Europe is less conflict-stricken than the Middle-East. There are many connecting points in the faiths of the two peoples, said Izsák Balázs president. Both Kurds, and Szeklers form a linguistic- cultural island, and such communities can magnify each others voices in international relations. The parties agreed that relations between the two peoples should be strengthened.

The Iraqi Kurdish community, counting over 5 million members, received widespread autonomous competences after the downfall of the regime of Saddam Hussein. These include the right to determine the use of natural resources in their region, as well as the linguistic equality of the Kurdish language on the whole territory of Iraq. Ever since the adoption of a new constitution in 2005, Iraq has legally declared herself as a federation.
