of the Committee on National Cohesion of the National Assembly
regarding the event held on 10 March 2013 at Târgu Mureș in celebration of the Day of Szekler Freedom
At its session of 12 March 2013, the Committee on National Cohesion issued the following position statement in accordance with Section 15(4) of Act XXXVI of 2012 on the National Assembly and Section 96/B of Resolution No. 46/1994 (IX. 30) OGY of the National Assembly:
The Committee on National Cohesion of the Hungarian National Assembly expresses its appreciation to the organisers and participants of the events held on 10 March 2013 in Târgu Mureș and various locations worldwide to mark the Day of Szekler Freedom.
The Committee supports the efforts of the Szekler National Council and the Szeklers in general to promote the regional autonomy of the Szekler Land in line with the creation of a single Szekler public administration and development region consisting of eight Szekler Seats as well as the free use of Szekler national symbols. The Committee rejects the drastic change of ethnic proportions in the Szekler Land by any means, including the planned redrawing of public administrative boundaries, in violation of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages and in conflict with Recommendation 1881 (2007) of the Council of Europe.
The Committee urges the Government of Hungary to make all possible diplomatic efforts both in terms of Hungarian-Romanian bilateral relations and on an international level to prevent the planned break-up of the the Szekler Land.
The Committee on National Cohesion of the National Assembly is committed to using all legal means available to support the autonomy initiatives of Hungarian national communities in neighbouring countries in conformity with European practice.
