Open Letter to Viktória Ferenc, Member of the European Parliament

Dear Madam Member,

We thank you for your speech delivered on July 10 in Strasbourg in the European Parliament, in which you placed side by side the fate of the Hungarians in Transcarpathia and the cause of the national regions. Your words made it clear that this citizens’ initiative carries significance not only within the framework of the Union, but may also bring hope and support to communities left outside its borders.

We consider particularly important your thought that identity—linguistic, cultural, and national belonging—is not only a community value, but also one of the spiritual conditions for human survival in times of crisis. The example of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia painfully shows that this is not a theoretical question: in the reality of war and forced conscriptions, it is about human lives and human dignity.

The European cause of the national regions is therefore inseparable from that of the Hungarians in Transcarpathia. If the European Union truly stands for diversity, this commitment must also be reflected in practice—precisely where the need is greatest: in crisis-stricken border areas, where the preservation of identity can save lives.

The communities of the national regions—both within and beyond the Union—are grateful that you brought the voice and experience of your own homeland into the European debate. By doing so, you strengthened the very message that lies at the heart of this initiative: identity and diversity are not burdens, but resources that sustain and unite even in times of crisis.
