28 October, 2013
The Brussels HUNINEU office for the European Representation of Hungarian National Communities, the Alliance of Hungarians in Belgium, and the Committee for Human Rights in Central Europe herewith express their view in this joint statement, in which they support the objectives of the Grand March of the Szeklers held on 27 October 2013, organized by Szekler National Council in cooperation with and in unison with all the Hungarian political forces, and numerous civil organisations in Romania.
It is our determined standpoint that the object of the demonstration of setting up an autonomous region for Szeklerland fully corresponds with the fundamental principles of the European Union and carries the European policy of subsidiarity into effect. At the same time it does not harm the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Romania, on the contrary, as it has been proved by practical experiences of the prominently functioning autonomous regions in many Member States, it strengthens the inner cohesion, economic competiveness and stability of the states.
The above mentioned organisations hereby reaffirm their support of the autonomy initiatives of the Hungarian national communities living in the neighbouring countries of Hungary in conformity with European practice. Therefore these organisations expressed their support and solidarity to the Grand March of the Szeklers with an evening demonstration held on 27 October 2013 also in Brussels with the participation of hundreds.
