On the 10th of March 1854, in Marosvásárhely/Targu-Mures, on the field of Postarét, three Szekler Martyrs were executed. The college teacher Bágyi Török János, the lawyer Martonosi Gálfi Mihály and Nagyváradi Horváth Károly, members of the so called Makk-conspiration tried to revive the flame of the fallen Hungarian revolution. Their goal was to reach national self-determination and they gave their lifes for it, showing an example of courage and loyalty to the posterity.

For Szeklers of our present day, this occasion is not only the day of remembrance, but also that of togetherness. The day of conscious and joint actions for self determination.
Let us work together to make the 10th of March, the Day of the Szekler Martyrs also the Day of the Szekler Freedom! The monument on the late Postarét is for generations of Szeklers – with the words of the great novelist Jókai Mór – the symbol of the “legal, free and independent national status”. The goal of the Szekler National Council is to achieve territorial autonomy for Szeklerland, which in the 21st century means the same as legal, free and independent national status ment in the 19th century. Let us make these six words, the words of Jókai Mór, the slogan of our fight for autonomy.

In the name of the Szekler National Council I call for the leaders, the ministers and the believers of the traditional Hungarian churches in Transylvania, the political parties and other organizations of the Hungarian community, to join us in celebrating the Day of the Szekler Freedom in Marosvásárhely/Targu-Mures, the capital of Szeklerland. I call them to take part in organizing this event, let us take common decisions, in order to encourage the whole Szekler community to line up unanimously under the flag of the Szekler freedom.

Marosvásárhely/Targu-Mures, the 16th of February 2013

Balázs Izsák
The president of the Szekler National Council
