Romania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Adrian Cioroianu, voicing Romania’s official standpoint concerning Kosovo’s status, announced that Romania opposes the provision of collective rights for minorities. We would like to remind Romania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and all its competent public authorities, that the basic human rights are universal and are to be applied to everybody, since they emerge from the inherent dignity of the human being!

The first article of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights proclaims the right of the people to self-determination, a right that is not only the foundation of the existence of sovereign states nowadays, but is also the basis of the existing autonomies within these states. In other words, it is not just the right of the people of Spain, Great-Britain, Italy, Germany or France to have their own state, but it is also the right of the Basque, Catalan, Scottish, Bavarian, Corsican people or of the South-Tyrolese Austrians, to have their own legislative and executive institutions in line with the legislation of the previously mentioned sovereign states.

Romania adopted The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, inserting it into its internal legal system through the enactment of law nr. 212 of 1974, and since year 2007 is a member state of a system, the European Union, which relies on the common assets of values of the European civilization, and on the esteem of human dignity and freedom. Given this context, it is unacceptable that the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs sides with the Russian imperial endeavors, or even with the political legacy of the war-criminal Milosevic, instead of defending these values.

The example of Kosovo proves that the emergence of the right of people to self-determination cannot be prohibited! Based on the right of self-determination, the Albanians of Kosovo have the right to an independent Kosovo. Based on the same right, the Serbians of Kosovo have also their own right to a large-scale autonomy, which should be shaped according to their own conceptions and community aspirations! To achieve this, it is necessary to draw their legitimate representatives into the international phase of the negotiations.

Based on the right of the people to self-determination, the Szekler people have its right to the autonomy of Szeklerland! The Szekler National Council emphasized for several times, that the proclaimed will of the Szekler people regarding its self-determination does not harm Romania’s interests, quite to the contrary, it serves the stability and economic development of the region. The Szekler National Council wishes to achieve Szeklerland’s autonomy through the adoption of an organic law, by the Romanian legislation. Considering all this, we believe that it is unjustified for the Romanian state to turn against the majority of the member states of the European Union, where it was accepted into recently, driven by the fear from its own citizens! The Romanian government and legislation should not be afraid of the Szeklers, rather trust them as law-abiding citizens who respect the values of law and democracy, and should vote the bill presented to them concerning the territorial autonomy of Szeklerland! The unjustified opposition to the great majority of the European Union, regardless of its national identity, violates the interests of all Romanian citizens, and it is in contradiction with those international commitments which anchored Romania on the side of the protection of human rights.
